How to write an amount in words
The whole amount is written in words, followed by the currency, then the fractional part with its unit. Many invoices, especially in the Gulf and South Asia, add “Only” at the start or end so nothing can be inserted.
| Number | In words |
|---|---|
| 1,000.00 USD | One thousand US dollars |
| 1,250.50 EUR | One thousand two hundred fifty euros and fifty cents |
| 2,000,000 AED | Two million UAE dirhams |
| 1,234.05 GBP | One thousand two hundred thirty-four pounds sterling and five pence |
Common mistakes
- Mismatched figures: The amount in words and in figures must agree, including the fractional part.
- Missing currency: Always name the currency in words, especially on export documents.
- Hyphens: Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are hyphenated (thirty-four).
